How SimplaBooka Works

SimplaBooka helps language learners read books in their target language by providing simplified, AI-translated versions at various CEFR levels. Whether you're a beginner or advanced learner, find answers to all your questions below.

Getting Started

SimplaBooka is an AI-powered reading platform that helps language learners read books in their target language. We translate and simplify books to match your proficiency level (A1 to C2), so you can enjoy real stories from day one-not just boring textbooks.

Our platform offers two ways to read:

  • Library - A collection of public domain classics (like Sherlock Holmes, Jules Verne, Jack London) already translated and simplified into multiple languages and levels.
  • My Books - Upload your own ebooks and get personalized AI translations at the level you choose.

SimplaBooka is for anyone who wants to learn a language through reading:

  • Language learners who want to read real books, not just textbook exercises.
  • Self-study enthusiasts looking for engaging practice material at their level.
  • Teachers and tutors searching for leveled reading materials for their students.
  • Book lovers who want to enjoy a favorite book in a language they're learning.
  • General readers who simply want to read a book that's only available in a foreign language. Just choose C2 level for a direct, full translation into your native language.

Whether you're a complete beginner (A1) or already advanced (C1/C2), SimplaBooka adapts the text to your current level so you can read with confidence and improve naturally.

You can browse the Library and explore book details without an account. However, to take books to your personal library-whether original versions or translations-you'll need to sign in. Creating an account is quick and free; just sign in with your Google account and you're ready to go.

  • Library is our public collection of pre-translated and simplified books. These are public domain titles available to all users. You can browse, search, and take books that are already prepared in multiple languages and CEFR levels to your personal library.
  • My Books is your personal space. Here you can upload your own ebooks (EPUB or FB2 format) and translate them into any supported language and difficulty level. Only you can see and access the books in your personal library.

In short: Library = shared public books. My Books = your private uploads.

  1. Visit SimplaBooka - Go to our homepage and take a quick look around.
  2. Pick your goal - Tell us if you're a learner, want to translate your own books, or just want to browse.
  3. Choose your language and level - Select the language you're learning and your current proficiency (A1-C2).
  4. Get recommendations - We'll suggest books perfect for your level.
  5. Take a book and start reading - Sign in, take your first book to your library, and start reading online or download it to your favorite device.

That's it! You can be reading a real book in your target language within minutes.

Reading and Language Learning

Reading exposes you to real, natural language in context-something flashcards and grammar drills can't replicate. When you read stories, you encounter vocabulary and sentence structures again and again, which helps your brain internalize them naturally. You also learn how words actually fit together (collocations), discover idiomatic expressions, and absorb grammar without consciously memorizing rules.

Research shows that extensive reading is one of the most effective ways to build vocabulary, improve reading speed, and develop an intuitive feel for a language. Unlike textbooks that use artificial, isolated sentences, books show you how language works in real-world situations-dialogue, descriptions, emotions, and storytelling.

Most importantly, reading books you enjoy keeps you motivated. When you're curious about what happens next, you'll keep reading-and the more you read, the faster you improve.

Jumping straight into original literature can be overwhelming and discouraging. If you're constantly stopping to look up words, you lose the flow of reading-and the enjoyment. Studies suggest that comfortable reading happens when you understand around 95-98% of the words on a page. Below that, reading becomes a chore.

Simplified books bridge the gap between textbook exercises and authentic literature. They use vocabulary and grammar appropriate for your level while still telling a complete, engaging story. You build confidence, expand your vocabulary gradually, and actually finish books-which is incredibly motivating.

Think of it like training wheels: they help you build skills and enjoy the ride until you're ready to go faster on your own. With SimplaBooka, you can start at your current level and progress step by step toward the original text.

Mixing both is ideal once you're ready. A good rule of thumb:

  • For building confidence and fluency, read at or slightly below your level. This is your "comfort zone" where reading feels smooth and enjoyable.
  • For stretching your skills, occasionally read something one level above your current proficiency. Expect to look up a few more words, but you'll grow faster.
  • For challenge and comparison, try reading a simplified version first, then the original (or a higher-level version) of the same book. You already know the story, so following the more complex text becomes much easier.

With SimplaBooka, every book in the Library includes the original alongside simplified versions. This makes it easy to compare, switch, or gradually upgrade your reading level whenever you feel ready.

Consistency matters more than quantity. Even 10-15 minutes of daily reading can lead to noticeable improvement over weeks and months. The key is to read regularly and choose texts you actually enjoy-forced reading rarely sticks.

If you're looking for benchmarks:

  • 10-15 minutes/day - Good starting point; builds the habit.
  • 20-30 minutes/day - Solid progress in vocabulary and reading speed.
  • 30+ minutes/day - Accelerated improvement; you'll notice changes within weeks.

Remember, every page counts. A short story finished is worth more than a novel abandoned. Start with what feels sustainable, and let your interest pull you forward naturally.

Absolutely-in fact, that's one of the best ways to use it. Language apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or Anki are great for drilling vocabulary and grammar basics, but they often lack the immersive, contextual practice that reading provides. SimplaBooka complements these tools by letting you apply what you've learned in real stories.

If you're taking a language course or working with a teacher, SimplaBooka can serve as extra reading practice aligned to your CEFR level. Many teachers already use graded readers to reinforce classroom learning-SimplaBooka gives you access to hundreds of titles you can tailor to your exact level.

Use your language app for daily drills, and SimplaBooka for enjoyable, extended reading practice. They work together beautifully.

CEFR Levels and Simplified Texts

CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages-an international standard for describing language proficiency. It divides learners into six levels from complete beginner to near-native fluency:

  • A1 (Beginner): You know basic words and simple phrases. You can introduce yourself and ask simple questions.
  • A2 (Elementary): You can handle everyday situations-shopping, ordering food, asking for directions. Short, simple sentences feel comfortable.
  • B1 (Intermediate): You understand the main points of clear texts on familiar topics. You can describe experiences, give opinions, and read simple stories.
  • B2 (Upper Intermediate): You can read longer texts and follow complex arguments. You understand most news articles, reviews, and modern fiction.
  • C1 (Advanced): You read fluently with very few dictionary lookups. You understand nuance, irony, and demanding literary or professional texts.
  • C2 (Proficient): Near-native comprehension. You read any text-literature, poetry, academic papers-without difficulty.

Most language courses, exams (like DELE, DELF, Goethe-Zertifikat), and textbooks use CEFR to indicate difficulty. SimplaBooka uses the same scale so you can match your current level to the right book version.

When we simplify a book, we adapt it to a specific CEFR level. This means:

  • Vocabulary is adjusted. Complex, rare, or literary words are replaced with more common equivalents appropriate for the level.
  • Sentence structure is made clearer. Long, nested sentences are broken into shorter ones. Passive voice may become active; unusual grammar is avoided.
  • Idioms and cultural references are rephrased when they might confuse learners.
  • The story, characters, and plot remain the same. You still read the same book-just in language you can actually understand.

Simplification is different from summarizing. We don't cut chapters or skip scenes. We rewrite the text so it's accessible at your level while preserving the author's story and meaning.

Here's a side-by-side example to show the difference.

Original (C2 level):

"The fog was so dense that, though the shop lights shone dimly through it, they cast no useful illumination onto the slippery cobblestones beneath Holmes's hurrying feet."

Simplified to B1:

"The fog was thick. The shop lights were on, but they were weak. Holmes walked quickly on the wet stones, but he could not see much."

Simplified to A2:

"There was a lot of fog. The streets were dark. Holmes walked fast. The ground was wet."

This lets beginners enjoy the same mystery story as advanced readers-each at a level that feels achievable instead of overwhelming.

Yes-but not within the same file while reading.

SimplaBooka generates separate ebook files for each level. If a book has an original plus A2, B1, and B2 versions, you'll see all of them on the book's detail page. You can take any or all of them to your library, then read online or download.

We're exploring an in-app reader with instant level-switching for the future, but for now, taking multiple versions gives you full flexibility.

Books in the Library and Public Domain

Our public library consists entirely of public domain works-classic literature whose copyright has expired and can be legally shared with everyone. We source original texts from established digital archives like Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and other reputable public domain collections.

Once we have an original text, we use AI to translate it into multiple languages and simplify it to different CEFR levels. Each book in the library typically includes the original text plus several translations and simplified versions, so you can choose the one that matches your learning needs.

We focus on well-known, beloved titles-think Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Jules Verne adventures, Jack London stories, classic fairy tales, and timeless novels. These are books you've heard of, stories worth reading, and now they're accessible in your target language at your level.

A book enters the public domain when its copyright expires, which typically happens 70 years after the author's death (though exact rules vary by country). Once a book is in the public domain, anyone can legally copy, distribute, translate, and adapt it without permission or payment.

This is why our public library is filled with classics-authors like Arthur Conan Doyle, Jane Austen, Mark Twain, and H.G. Wells. Their works are free for everyone to enjoy and share, including us.

Public domain doesn't mean low quality-it means timeless. Many of the greatest works in world literature are now public domain, and they're just as captivating today as when they were first written.

The original public domain texts are freely available everywhere-you can find them on Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and many other sites. We offer them as a convenience so you have everything in one place. Downloading originals is free and unlimited for all logged-in users.

Translations and simplified versions are different. Creating them requires significant AI processing, which costs real money to run. Every translation we create involves cloud computing resources, AI model usage fees, and infrastructure costs.

To keep the platform sustainable while still making books accessible, we use a membership model: free users (Basic tier) can take up to 3 translated or simplified books per month to their library. If you need more, paid memberships offer 10 or 30 takes per month. Once you've taken a book, you can read it online or download it as many times as you want.

Yes! We're always looking to expand our library with books readers actually want. If there's a public domain title you'd love to see translated and simplified, let us know.

Drop us an email at support@simplabooka.com with the book title and author. We prioritize requests based on demand, so if multiple readers ask for the same book, it moves up our list.

Keep in mind we can only add books that are genuinely in the public domain. Recent bestsellers and modern authors are still protected by copyright and can't be included in the public library. For those, you can always upload your own legally obtained copy and translate it privately in "My Books."

Absolutely. If you see a book in the library but it doesn't have a translation in your target language or at your preferred CEFR level, tell us.

Use the contact form or email support@simplabooka.com with:

  • The book title
  • The language you want
  • The CEFR level you need (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2)

We add translations based on demand. Popular requests get prioritized, so even if we can't add it immediately, your vote counts.

Most book covers in our library are newly designed using AI-generated artwork. We create custom covers that capture the mood and setting of each story while giving the library a fresh, modern look.

We don't use original vintage cover art from old editions for several reasons: those images may still be under copyright (even if the text isn't), and many classic editions had no covers at all or ones that look dated today.

Our AI-generated covers are unique to SimplaBooka. They're designed to look appealing on digital devices and help you browse visually-while staying true to the spirit of each story.

Translating Your Own Books

You can upload and translate any ebook you legally own-not just public domain classics. This includes:

  • Books you've purchased from ebook stores (DRM-free copies)
  • Free ebooks you've downloaded legally
  • Public domain books from any source
  • Self-published or independent titles you have permission to use

Your uploaded books and translations are private. Only you can see and access them in your "My Books" section. We don't share, publish, or make your private translations available to anyone else.

The one important requirement: you must have the legal right to the book file you upload. We provide the translation tool for personal use-you're responsible for ensuring your upload complies with copyright laws in your country.

SimplaBooka currently supports two popular ebook formats:

  • EPUB - The most common ebook format, used by most ebook stores. Works great for fiction and non-fiction.
  • FB2 - A format popular in Eastern Europe, especially for fiction.

When you upload a book, we preserve its format. If you upload an EPUB, you'll get an EPUB back. Same with FB2.

What about PDF or other formats?

  • PDF is not supported because it's designed for fixed layouts (print), not flowing text. PDFs often have formatting issues that make translation unreliable.
  • Other proprietary formats are not directly supported. You'll need to convert them to EPUB first using ebook management software.

We're considering adding more formats in the future based on user demand.

We keep your uploaded books and translations in your account so you can access them anytime. Your files remain in "My Books" until you choose to delete them.

This means:

  • You can re-download your original upload or translation whenever you need it
  • You can request additional translations of the same book (different languages or CEFR levels) without uploading it again
  • Your personal library grows as you add more books

If you want to delete a book and its translations, you can do so from your "My Books" page. Deleted files are removed permanently from our servers.

Yes, absolutely. Once you've paid for a translation, it's yours forever. You can download it as many times as you want at no additional cost.

Your translations are stored in your account and accessible from "My Books" whenever you need them. Lost your file? New phone? Just log in and download again.

This applies to all your private translations. The credits you spent covered the translation work-re-downloading the result is free and unlimited.

Note: This is different from the public Library, where taking translations is limited by your membership tier. Once you've taken a book or translated your own, downloads are unlimited.

Yes-the files you download are standard ebook formats (EPUB or FB2), and you can edit them with any compatible software.

For EPUB files, popular editing tools include:

  • Calibre (free, all platforms) - Full-featured ebook management and editing
  • Sigil (free, all platforms) - Dedicated EPUB editor
  • Any text editor - EPUB files are just zipped HTML/XML, so technically any code editor works

If you find errors in the AI translation or want to personalize something, you're free to make changes. The downloaded file is yours to modify as you see fit.

We don't currently have an in-app editing feature, but it's something we may add in the future for quick corrections.

SimplaBooka supports 85 languages for translation and simplification, covering most of the world's major languages and many regional ones. You can translate your books from and into any of these languages.

AI Translation, Quality and Limitations

No-let's be honest. A skilled human translator who specializes in literary translation will produce better, more nuanced results, especially for fiction with complex style, wordplay, or cultural references.

However, AI translation has improved dramatically in recent years. Modern large language models (LLMs) produce surprisingly natural, readable text. For most learners reading simplified versions, the quality is more than sufficient to follow a story, learn vocabulary, and enjoy the book.

The real question isn't "which is better?"-it's "which is available?" And that's where AI translation changes everything.

Because most books will never be professionally translated-and almost none will be simplified for language learners.

Think about it: there are millions of books in the world. Only a tiny fraction gets translated into other languages, and even fewer get adapted into graded readers for learners. Professional translation is expensive, time-consuming, and only happens when publishers see commercial potential.

If you want to read a specific book in a language it was never published in, or at a CEFR level that doesn't exist-your options are zero. You simply can't read it.

Our AI-powered approach changes that. It won't match a masterful human translation, but it makes books accessible that would otherwise remain locked away forever. SimplaBooka uses smart algorithms and advanced AI to translate and simplify any book, in minutes, into the language and level you need.

So yes-if a high-quality human translation and professionally simplified version exist for the book you want, go for those! But when they don't (and for most books, they won't), SimplaBooka is an always-available tool that opens doors that would otherwise stay closed.

Grammar is generally excellent. The AI models we use are trained on massive amounts of text and produce grammatically correct output in all supported languages. You can read with confidence that the sentence structures are proper and natural.

Style is intentionally different at each level-that's the point of simplification:

  • Lower levels (A1-A2) use shorter sentences, basic vocabulary, and straightforward constructions. The style is deliberately simple and clear.
  • Middle levels (B1-B2) have more varied sentence structures and richer vocabulary while staying accessible.
  • Higher levels (C1-C2) preserve more of the original style and complexity.

The AI adapts vocabulary, sentence length, and grammar complexity to match each CEFR level. The text reads naturally for that level-which means an A2 version won't have the literary flourishes of the original, but it will be appropriate for an A2 reader.

Occasional awkward phrasings can occur, especially with idiomatic expressions or culturally specific content. If you spot something that sounds off, you can edit the downloaded file or let us know-we're constantly improving our translation quality.

First, remember that no translation is perfect-even human ones. AI translations occasionally produce awkward phrasings, miss cultural nuances, or make word choice errors. Here's what you can do:

For your own private books (My Books):

  • Download the EPUB or FB2 file and edit it yourself using tools like Calibre or Sigil. You own the file-change whatever you like.
  • If a particular book consistently has issues, you could try translating it again with different settings.

For books in the public Library:

  • Email us at support@simplabooka.com with the book title, the specific passage, and what seems wrong. We review reports and can regenerate translations for commonly-used library books.
  • Your feedback helps us improve our translation prompts and catch recurring issues.

We appreciate every report. The more feedback we get, the better we can tune our system to avoid similar mistakes in future translations.

Yes-translation quality will continue to improve for several reasons:

  1. AI models keep getting better. We use leading language models from providers like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. As these models improve with new releases, our translations automatically benefit.
  2. We refine our algorithms. We continuously improve the prompts, instructions, and processing logic that guide how books are translated and simplified. Each improvement applies to new translations.
  3. User feedback helps us learn. When you report issues, we identify patterns and adjust our approach. Popular library books may be regenerated with improved quality.
  4. Automatic reliability systems. Our platform automatically switches between AI providers if one produces poor results, ensuring you get the best available output.

The SimplaBooka of today is already good-but the SimplaBooka of next year will be even better. That's the nature of building on rapidly evolving AI technology.

Membership, Credits and Pricing

Translation cost depends on the length of the book. When you request a translation for your own book, we analyze the text and show you an exact cost estimate before you confirm. The longer the book, the higher the cost-but the price is always transparent upfront.

Pricing works like this:

  • You see the exact cost before you pay. No surprises. The estimate shows how much will be deducted from your credit balance.
  • Membership discounts apply. If you have a Plus or Book Giant membership, your discount (25% or 50%) is automatically applied to the estimate.
  • Minimum price is $0.99 before any discount. With a Book Giant membership (50% off), the minimum drops to $0.50.

Typical costs for a full-length novel range from $1 to $5 depending on length and your membership discount. Short stories and novellas cost less.

Once you confirm and the translation starts, the price is locked-even if something changes on our end, you pay what was quoted.

Membership and credits work together but serve different purposes:

Membership (optional monthly subscription)

  • Controls how many library books you can take per month (3, 10, or 30)
  • Gives you discounts when translating your own books (0%, 25%, or 50% off)
  • Resets monthly-take limits refresh at the start of each billing cycle
  • Once taken, books are yours to read online or download unlimited times
TierMonthly PriceBook TakesTranslation Discount
Basic (Free)$03/month0%
Plus$4.9910/month25%
Book Giant$9.9930/month50%

Credits (prepaid balance)

  • Used to pay for translations of your own uploaded books
  • Work like a wallet: you buy credits, then spend them on translations
  • Never expire-use them whenever you want
  • Larger packs give you bonus credits (up to 20% extra)
PackPriceBonusYou Get
Starter$5-$5.00
Standard$10+10%$11.00
Power$20+15%$23.00
Ultimate$50+20%$60.00

In short: Membership unlocks library access and discounts. Credits are what you spend to translate your own books. You can use one without the other, or combine both for the best value.

Yes-credits never expire. Once you buy them, they stay in your account forever until you use them.

This is different from membership take limits, which reset monthly. Here's how each works:

  • Credits: No expiration. Buy them once, use them whenever. Your balance carries forward indefinitely.
  • Take limits (membership): Reset at the start of each billing cycle. Unused takes don't roll over-use them or lose them.

So if you buy $20 worth of credits today but don't translate anything for six months, you'll still have $23.00 in your account (with the 15% bonus) waiting for you. Take your time finding the perfect book to translate-your credits will be there.

Original public domain texts are free-you can download them unlimited times at no cost. But translations and simplified versions require significant computing resources to create and store.

Here's what goes into every translation:

  • AI processing costs. Each translation runs through advanced language models (like GPT, Claude, or Gemini). These services charge based on text length.
  • Infrastructure costs. We store your translations, manage download servers, and maintain the platform 24/7.
  • Quality work. We've built custom translation pipelines, simplification algorithms, and quality controls. This took thousands of hours to develop and continues to improve.

We keep the free tier generous (3 takes/month) so everyone can access translated books. Memberships let active readers take more books while helping us cover costs and keep the platform running.

The original public domain text? That's truly free-download it as many times as you want. The AI-powered translation and simplification is the value we add, and that's what the membership limits apply to.

Your credits stay safe. They never expire, regardless of your membership status.

If your membership ends (you cancel or don't renew), here's what happens:

  • Your credit balance remains unchanged. All purchased credits stay in your account.
  • You can still translate your own books. Credits work independently of membership.
  • You lose membership perks. No more translation discount (you'll pay full price), and your library take limit drops to 3/month (Basic tier).
  • Take limits reset. If you had Plus (10/month) or Book Giant (30/month), you'll now have the Basic limit of 3/month.

You can always upgrade again later to restore your discounts and higher download limits. And if you have credits left, they'll still be there waiting for you.

Absolutely! The free Basic tier lets you:

  • Browse the entire library without logging in
  • Download original public domain books unlimited times (free)
  • Take up to 3 translated/simplified books per month to your library (then read online or download unlimited)
  • Upload your own books and translate them using credits
  • New users get a welcome gift of bonus credits to try translating
